So sad. I wanted to earn my NQ locally so I can compete next year without having to qualify (if I remember the rules correctly). I will see what I can do.

LIST
In the mean time, I will continue to train. I also will stop adding to my leap LIST (or bucket LIST) and start crossing off things. Last year, I got so caught up in booze and boys that I forgot about the list I created labeled "things to do once I retire from dance." On that list include competing of course, but also triathlon, half marathon, guitar lessons, learn a language, travel.

MUSIC
I started guitar lessons this month. :D I suck!! However, I look forward to guitar class once a week and I enjoy the peace of mind it provides when I am at home practicing.

I AM NOT A RUNNER
I signed up for a half marathon in July in Chicago. I told my friend people have died running in Chicago. He reminded me people have died in the Navy.

In my mind, I can train for a half while I build muscle. I seriously doubt I can gain muscle like I need to for a fitness physique BUT because I've already signed up and it's on my LIST, I'm doing it and very excited. I've had my eye set on a half since my 20s and finally have the courage to do it.

HEALTH
I've been dealing with daily migraines for almost 2 weeks. I saw a neurologist because I work for neurology. :) I got meds, they aren't helping. I think I need a detox day of just juice, yoga, and meditation.

Well, time to get the weekend started! MUAY THAI TIME (just what I need after 2 weeks of headaches).

November Wake Up Call

With just 2 months (actually less) left in 2011, 2012 is around the corner. It is already time to plan competitions, start dieting if one is competing in the early spring, and start heavy duty prep! My first contest will most likely happen in May if possible. I don't want to diet for several months and then compete show after show.

With a new job, I am not sure how taking time off will work out. Training will be so much easier due to new and improved hours, but getting time off? Who knows? If it is possible, I will try to do a local contest so I won't have to take off work for a national qualifier.

My first goal was the Arnold but I don't know if it is a wise decision to make it my first contest this season. It's such a HUGE show, maybe if I were a couple seasons in and experienced, I would be a better candidate. I would like to attend regardless!

I am learning my routine next month. All I have left is putting together a costume and start my workout/diet. I am using my suit from 2010 that I won, I've only worn it once and it is such a pretty suit, I can not let it just sit in my closet.

2012 is coming way too quickly!

October Fear Fest!

Fear Fest!

In honor of October and Halloween, there are tons of haunted houses, tours, and spooky movies playing on TV and movie theaters. I love to be spooked, Halloween is a fave of mine because of the fear fest! Speaking of fear, there is a fear in me when it comes to the fitness aspect of my life.

Fear of failure?

Fear of success?

Fear of being lost among the rest?

I've come to realize that fitness competitions causes a lot of fear and anxiety within myself. At this moment, I am in a state of mind where I want to start new, de-clutter my mind and home...and fitness competitions came to mind. I have a plan to compete again in 2012 but thinking back to last year, I had a lot of worries, fear, "what ifs" during contest prep. I can't control what the judges want, I can't help my body structure, I am the only one who holds myself back if I worry about those components. I was missing out on the positive aspect of competing: meeting new guys and gals, improving my physique and skills, the challenge.

I'm going purge my fear during this fear fest month, I will continue to build my mind and body the best I can so it won't consume my entire being when I am in prep next year. :)

Besides competition dreams, I have career dreams, relationship dreams, self empowerment goals...competitions are just a small part of my life and I had a tough time balancing it but have no fear, 2012 will be a bad ass year!

Fall fever!

Fall is here, my favorite time of the year! I lived it up this summer. I am happy to say I did not totally neglect my workouts or fitness! :) I've never had balance in the past, so I needed a summer of NO COMMITMENTS! I had a blast and now that I got it out of my system, I am focused more than ever. I really missed the stage.

I have my sights on a few contests in 2012. I am going to stick to fitness for the 2012 season and we shall see what happens. I love competing in fitness but the aches and pains are increasing, even in my year long off season. I love the bikini and figure look as well, am I more suited for it? Being so long and less muscular, perhaps....but for 2012, fitness will be my thing, even if I don't have the ideal physique or gymnastics ability!

I really want to go to the Arnold, I've been saying this for years but I really want to go and perhaps compete. My goal would be to work a booth and compete at a later contest in March! I definitely want to compete at Jr Nats and Team U if I qualify.

I don't have much to update aside from that! Been living and loving life!! All is well in my world.

Staying grounded

Welcome to August. Despite not having a competition this year, I found myself struggling to stay motivated because my focus was on work and partying during the spring and early summer. My work load continues to increase but I think I got the partying out of my system-I must say it was much needed. :)

I found that staying grounded helps me stay focused on my goals!
1) Continue to eat clean. If it doesn't do your body good, why eat it? I notice I save money and calories by sticking to healthy, cleans foods. Eating clean also boosts my energy, keeps my skin clearer, and makes me feel better, mentally.

2) Stick with water. Water is just better for us, period. Soda makes me feel bloated and all the ingredients make me nervous but I have a caffeine habit, last year, I was drinking Diet Coke and Coke Zero daily. I limit it to ONLY WHEN NECESSARY days at work. I started to buy green tea to replace soda, loaded with antioxidants!

3) Visit my goals daily/weekly & keep up with the industry. Contest prep will be easier if I keep my eating clean and continue my workouts, strength training, and flexibility training NOW. Staying in touch with fitness friends and keep up with the industry news keeps me motivated.

4) See the big picture. Although an IFBB pro card is my goal, all the hard work and prep will lead to MY OWN personal success and glory. A card won't define me, nor will it make or break me.

5) Stay challenged. I get bored easily. If I don't continue to challenge myself physically, I get bored and bloated. That is where weights, Muay Thai/Jiu Jitsu, and dance class comes into play!

6) Take time to relax, observe, and be at peace. Here is a take home note from Daily Om: "Make time for stillness, silence, and solitude. The world can be noisy, and we are subject to all kinds of noises nearly every waking hour. We are also often “on the go” and unable to relax. Being alone in a peaceful place and making time for quiet can help you stay in touch with yourself."

7) Declutter: I find it hard to relax when I have clutter, whether the clutter is mental (messy thoughts, self doubt) or physical (messy house, disorganized desk).

Every day is an opportunity to be the best you can be. It is never too early focus on the 2012 competition season. "Success is where preparation and opportunity meet." Bobby Unser

I break hearts and faces

July has been awesome. I'm back on the fitness train: got my new diet, I'm challenging myself with strength training, continuing dance class and muay thai. I will be spectating and partying. :) Of course, if I can work a booth, that would be amazing but who doesn't want that. The supply and demand of ladies willing to work vs opportunities are slim for us gals. I worked a booth last year, so I know what it is all about, it's hard work and customer service is a must but it was well worth it. I can't wait to go to the expo and IFBB pro contests.

Yesterday, I got a cute top...well, in my opinion it is cute but I doubt I would ever get hit on wearing it.

Road Blocks

How do you deal with road blocks? Do you think "it was meant to be" and know there is another option? Do you not take no for an answer and continue to truck along, questioning the whats and whys?

I have been experiencing a lot of professional road blocks this summer.

I applied to a online master degree program but got a note that they are getting rid of the online program and if I want to continue with my application process, I have to wait until 2012 and have to plan on attending the campus on site! So unless I move my entire life, it is not an option. Does this mean it is not meant to be?

I've been also pursing the military since 2009. It has been road block after road block. I knew it would be a lot of HURRY UP AND WAIT but it's been tough hanging on, hoping there will be a need for me. I've been told "there is no room for you at this time" last year but continuing to pursue it.

As for the fitness industry, I know each competitor designs her/his own destiny. It is MONTHS of dieting and contest prep for a few seconds on stage. The only road blocks I have experienced have been mental, there is no one to do the work for you, few will make a name for herself/himself and make a career out of it. IT IS YOU vs. YOU, despite it being a competition. I'm not ready to give up.

Summer lovin...

Summer lovin....partying and booze. After months and months of not drinking and going out, I figured I would get it out of my system, especially with no commitments of dance or competitions this summer. I am definitely enjoying my off season (can't say the same for my liver) but I have kept up with cardio, lifting and muay thai but I am not lifting with the same intensity as last year.

Two weeks ago, I attended my gym's MMA/Muay Thai fight, it was the same weekend of NPC Jr Nationals. There were no girls on the card but our gym represented well and we won our fights. It was an honor to see local Atlanta UFC fighter, Clay Harvison in the audience! A feeling of urgency came upon me, I wondered if I would ever get that good to fight? Would I ever compete again? There is nothing like the feeling of regret, and that motivated me to really pump it up in the gym. I should always aim to be the BEST I can be. I had that mindset growing up and applied it to my grade and dancing, it got me pretty far. I don't want to lose that motivation.
I am planning on attending the 2011 IFBB Olympia so I can have a vacation + get motivated + maybe compete in the FLEX or MMA semi-contact event, I'll decide in a couple weeks. Regardless, challenging myself in the gym will take me to the next level.

I'm back on the clean diet + massive H20, and heavy lifting, and still punching and kicking (and still getting used to taking a punch) in Muay Thai and jiu jitsu! I'm am feeling really sick but managed to work shoulders today and I am already sore! I think that is all I can manage today. I'm going to prep my food and go to bed early tonight.

Here's to a healthy summer!

Eat, lift, and behave like a pro!

For the first time in FOREVER, I don't have obligations of dance practice! It's weird, for sure. I also decided to hold off on my competition plans and compete next year when I feel more confident in my physique and make positive changes.

"OFF"
Had a chat with IFBB pro Stacy Wright (who is making her pro debut at the NY Fitness Pro show this weekend) inspired me again to write this blog regarding my off season; the term "off season" is misleading because I plan on being the most productive I've ever been. Last fall/winter-that was an OFF season LOL. All I did was dance or go to the fight gym, I neglected heavy lifting & skills trainig until Jan. Since January, my overall shape is improving and I've lost weight BUT my trainer and I agreed to work on my physique in 2011 so I can hit the stage in 2012 with a new and improved package.

This summer will not be a boring one...

I plan to run 5Ks, maybe a 10K here and there. A half marathon is on my bucket list!

LIFT HEAVY. PERIOD. This is the summer of physique building!

Improve my routine skills and strength moves!

Vacation!!!!

I can take dance class, muay thai, jiu jitsu without fear of getting hurt...for now. I'm obvisouly accident prone.

Develop my nursing career (certifications, educational courses)

I'm adding another TO DO: yoga and meditate. I think this may help me in the long run...especially for nursing and competing! I haven't done yoga in awhile, I miss it like I miss dancing.

Attend Atlanta Mania- a huge fitness convention!! I've wanted to go for YEARS and never got to because of dance obligations.

2011 FITNESS GOALS

One month goal: 5K, fit into a bikini with no shame because I plan on going to the beaches!!

Three month goal: ATL Mania, definitely fit into a bikini with no shame...more beaches!!

Six month goal: I love running in the fall, so more 5ks/10ks, complete fitness routine with IFBB pro Nicole Duncan!

Nine month goal: Contest prep begins!!!

One year goal: Compete at the Arnold 2012! :) I missed out on attending the 2011 Arnold this year because of the boxing (which unfortunately I had to back out due to my injury -finger is still acting up BTW). I know it is a tough competition but I've always dreamed of competing at this event!

Long tem goal: My ultimate goal is to earn a pro card, so I will eat like a pro, lift like a pro, behave like a pro.

I'm going to keep my eye on the prize and be the best I can be daily!

Power of the mind

Recently, IFBB fitness pro Stacy Wright had a great suggestion on siouxcountry about getting that fire back. I experienced some rough "post competition blues" that lasted for months. After October, I literally could not step foot in a gym or eat an egg white. I haven't had fish since either, went back to vegetarian and some bad habits. I had to find ways to feel inspired to workout again & get healthy, thankfully I found the Muay Thai boxing facility to kick my booty back into gear & focused on that since Decemeber BUT the time is NOW to get back to lifting + cardio + diet + posing.

Here is what Stacy suggested:

1) Make a list of your goals! If the national show is on it..write that down.

2) Write what changes you want to make to your body between now and then and what you can do to achieve those things.

3) Then just start going down the list!

"Sometimes when it seems like a show is so far away, it's easy to put things off, but the longer you work towards something, the more consistent you are, and the little things you do day in and day out are going to be the things that make a difference on stage! Just take it one day at a time!"

When I was prepping for the boxing match, I had to maintain 150, so I only had a few lbs to lose so my diet wasn't super strict and I wasn't lifting heavy, I focused more on boxing training and running, NOT building mass.

Now that I can't fight, I am refocusing my energy on contest prep in a short amount of time. I plan on competing at 2011 NPC Team Universe so I can continue to improve after June if I am not looking my finest!

12 weeks out from 2011 NPC Jr Nationals when Friday comes!

Spring time = contest prep

Box Not
I officially pulled out the boxing match a couple weeks ago. I sprained my finger sparring a couple weeks ago, still hurts. I am finally able to make a fist (after 2 weeks) BUT still can't put pressure on it.

As sick as it is, I thought about pushing through the pain, but I thought about the damage I could cause by not letting an injury heal. Thought of not being able to work or workout came to mind. I feel like I let my friends and family down but they've been so supportive. My day will come one day soon!!

Fitness
I talked to Nicole Duncan about jumping right in and doing 2011 NPC Jr nationals and Team U, because I won a free routine!! She thinks it is possible-just need to HEAL! I'm scrambling for routine ideas and will have to practice fitness moves with one hand and DIET and CARDIO LIKE MAD.

I gotta be careful about my hand. I can't stand not being able to lift. I've been doing light body weight exercises like squats, lunges, abs, and bands. I will try barbellls and dumbbells over 10 lbs next week.
I booked my hotel for Jr Nats anyway. I booked my flights for Jr Nats and Team U back in Dec so slowly but surely preppin for NPC 2011 Jr Nationals! I'm sticking to fitness.

Here we go!

Training has been so much fun but really tough! Get me into any combat type of environment and I'm loving life. My only regret is that I wished I had the guts to get into boxing, jiu jitsu, muay thai, etc when I was younger!

Tonight's boxing session was INTENSE...is there a word stronger than "intense"..hmm? I almost threw up 3 times, I actually eyed the bucket in the corner of the ring and spotted the trash can, just in case. Felt food in my throat, I couldn't breath, my arms felt like they weighed 20 lbs each.

We did some light sparring tonight! Tonight was my 1st time. Up to this point, we've worked drills and defense to prepare for this. I got into the ring immediately thought, "Wow, this was for real. Here we go!" It was NUTS-in a good way, of course. My mind was going 100 mph!! So not only was I trying to block jabs punches, while avoiding body shots...thoughts of proper technique, foot work, thoughts of "oh shit, I could've done this or that!" all come to mind...AT THE SAME TIME...while getting hit and throwing punches.

Well, I FINALLY know what it feels like to get PUNCHED in the face! For the past few weeks, I wondered how it would feel to get punched. I wondered what I would feel physically & emotionally. My sparring partner & I got caught in a corner and she clocked me in the jaw. I think I yelled "OUCH!" just as a reaction, LOL!! I stood there for a second and realized, "Heeeey, I'm OK, wahooo!! Let's go again!" I'm very excited that "my first punch" is outta the way! For me, it is almost like a rite of passage. My jaw is a little stiff/sore but it's all good!

More boxing tomorrow...after I get my hair done. ;)

Boxing, nursing...what about fitness competitions?

Boxing and fitness competition dilemna!
Another fun Saturday of boxing yesterday. The trainer added a cool new cardio booster for us, it KILLS. I was definitely wheezing.

So, my opponent and I have to fight at 150 lbs; no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

That poses a bit of a problem with competing this summer. hmm. I don't know if I can go from 150lbs at the end of April to contest weight by Jr Nats!? I never weighed myself on contest day but I usually start peak week at 133-135. EEK.

*The pro of not competing is I can spend the rest of year putting on muscle and adding new elements to fitness skills...and maybe compete at the Arnold in March next year.

*The con is that I will miss out on a year of competing, which makes me so sad. I don't want to sit out! AND I already bought my plane tix to Chicago and NJ for NPC Jr Nationals and Team U.

RN on the Rise
So my job has added a ton of new responsibilities. Everyone got a little raise a couple months ago so I'm not counting on another raise for a long time since that is how my hospital is...but the new roles are going to help mold me into a leader and better RN.

1) Precepting a nursing student-She is in her final semester, I was honored they asked me to precept. I was initialy nervous, but I feel like it helps me review the basics and I love teaching, whether it is fitness classes, dance, and now nursing. My preceptor made an impression on me, I hope to make a positive impresison on her.

2) Chair of the Professional Development Committee-Our focus is hospital wide nurse education, elevating nurses to feel like they not "just a nurse" but a colleague of the MDs by different methods. We also are in the midst of planning Nurse WEEK! EEK! We meet once a month but I'm doing Chair duties a few times a week, emailing, reading, coordinating, etc. I have a co chair, who is awesome. She is about to get married, moved, and is in the midst of getting her Masters, all while working Full time...I thought i was busy!

3) Selected to take a Trauma Nurse Specialist course. The class is every Thursday in March. It'll help me focus on my career and not freak out about the boxing match LOL. I get to work traumas sporadically but I have a feeling they will be pulling me to work a lot more now. :D

So that's what going on in my word!

I'm going to workout and head to work soon. Have a good one!

Support for a first time fighter...

I am approximately 8 weeks out from my first ever boxing match that will take place April 23, 2011. I am honored to be selected to fight at the Atlanta Corporate Fight Night 2 event and have been training as best I can around my busy work schedule. I met my opponent a week ago, very nice young lady...and TALLER than I am!! I will have to cut a few pounds to make weight. I am excited and scared but looking forward to this once in a lifetime opportunity to fight in an event like this.

This post is about another side of training...support system.

SUPPORT
The support from family and friends has been an interesting mix and has affected me emotionally.

GYM
I approached a couple trainers at my gym and the reaction wasn't what I was expecting. I had thoughts and visions of the trainers holding the mitts for me, giving me advice while boosting my confidence, and most importantly, these were the guys I envisioned in my corner on fight night!!

Needless to say, I haven't seen or heard from any of them since. I do plan on going back to the gym, I don't know if I will wait until the event is over as I want to focus solely on boxing, but I do miss some of the people there and the atmosphere. I miss muay thai and jiu jitsu but can't risk injury, PLUS I'm "undoing" my knee, elbow, and kick instinct LOL.

The promoter said in the past, boxers selected for the show have come from other fight gyms, and the trainers there had no issues or problems training their boxer or cornering them. She finally had to ask who was going to train me and corner me on fight night, I had to tell her that my gym was most likely not on board and I didn't have anyone in my corner. The promoter, being the awesome lady she is, offered to train me.

A few of the members straight up asked what gym I had been training at and why I wasn't training there, and were shocked.

Needless to say, I was sad about it. I know a concern was about me "not having enough training" but no one in this event has ever fought or has been training for this!! This event is to showcase corporate business men and women who are NOT aspiring fighters blossom into a fighter for one night...for charity!!

FAMILY
As for family, my dad and younger brother plan on making the trip to Atlanta. My mother wants nothing to do with it and I've tried every few days to sell her on the idea but she's more stubborn than I am LOL. She hates boxing...period, end of story. My older brother is still in Iraq but I'm sure he would be there to cheer me on if he could.

My dad was a boxer and I hope I make him proud. I've only seen him fight once, when I was very young and freaked out but seeing him box and win left an impression, and here we are today, roles reversed.

FRIENDS & COWORKERS
Most of my friends and the few coworkers that know are supportive. The comment I get most is "what about getting hit in the face?" but I know it comes with the territory. I've been hit in the face quite a few times over the years: hit HARD by a softball and football, had stitches twice on my face, had two black eyes, broken cheek bone, etc. My face has healed, as I expect will happen should I get hit in practice or during the event.

I am not saying I'm fearless, I'm still concerned about all the punches that will be thrown my way, as I assume a lot of fighters are when they first begin any combat training, but I just need to get passed those initial punches in training.

SPONSORSHIP
Speaking of support, I am still in need of sponsorship. I am keeping a positive mindset about it and hoping that one will come through soon. :) The investor benefits are awesome, and whoever steps up and sponsors me will be on BLAST through the media, websites, banner, plus I get to wear their logo all over me that night.
So there you have it...another aspect of training = support system, which I think it is just as important as the training.

Dreams do come true!

Yep, had that crazy dream about a fight match a few weeks ago. Dreams do come true!

I was selected for Atlanta Corporate Fight Night 2!! I can't think of a better reason to get in the ring than for charity! ACFN is a corporate boxing event. Not your average, local fight production because they're promoting it to be a very classy, professional charity event. The fighters selected are "white collar" professional workers putting on the boxing gloves to help raise funds for charity.

I know it will be a huge challenge for all of us newbie boxers, but it seems like the trainers will also make it fun for everyone, as we are not pro fighters in our every day life. I'm excited to get started with training and to meet everyone involved in this amazing event.

I need a sponsor for this event! So if anyone knows any corporations who want to give back to the community while sponsoring an athlete, let me know!

Here's the Facebook page dedicated to the ACFN 2 event, "LIKE" it for updates:http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Atlanta-Corporate-Fight-Night/186936014663091

Here's my Facebook page! "LIKE" me for my fitness and training updates!
http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Sandra-Fields-Fitness-Competitor/115579921807944

Sweet dreams

So last night I had some awesome dreams! What girl doesn't love to dream about doing back flips or fighting in a MMA match!? ;)

After another lovely Saturday afternoon of muay thai and jiu jitsu, not to mention a free self defense class, I was excited to be lazy on my couch and watch TV because of Spike TV's marathon of UFC fights all day! I watched and studied each fighter's moves, daydreaming of me doing that! LOL UFC Fight for the Troops finally came on and I watched it til the end. I feel asleep shortly after, when the replay aired, so listening to the TV while dreaming definitely sparked a MMA dream for me! I was in an octagon cage, wearing a rash guard and board shorts with braided hair and the kicks, punches, and rolling felt so real. It got me even more pumped to take classes this week!! I'm gonna kill it!

Fast forward to my other dream...

I'm going to IFBB pro Nicole Duncan's fitness camp this weekend, which is packed full of cool events, such as workouts, dance class, tumbling, strength moves, etc. I am especially looking forward to the tumbling class because I haven't thrown a back handspring since last year (and it had been MANY years before that). I dreamed of doing back handsprings, over and over again, and it felt real!! OF COURSE, I am going to have to throw a few this weekend. I may even film it and post it to my fitness Facebook page. Stay tuned!

Clean My Slate 2011

I started my "Clean My Slate" mission on December 27. I wanted to bring in 2011 already feeling energized and excited for what's to come. I cleaned up my eating and added the weights again since I was on a body weight exercise kick for awhile.

Clean My Slate also pertains to my thoughts and emotions. This year, I want to maintain a positive outlook daily, whether I am at work, in the gym, or competing. Negative thinking or worrying thoughts of "what if" eats up so much energy, it's more productive and healthier for the mind, body, and soul to think "Yes, I can" in all aspects of life.

Here's to an amazing 2011! Happy New Year!

Do I have what it takes to make it in FITNESS?!!

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday!! Today, I am 19-23 weeks out from my 1st 2011 competition! I had an up/down season emotionally...though my placings would indicate a strong beginning for a newbie fitness gal! I decided in 2011, I will stick with fitness.

After starting in fitness in 2010, I dabbled in the bikini division in my final 2 contests. I don't have what NPC considers the "ideal fitness physique" and I am not a gymnast so I rebelled against my fitness roots and strutted and posed in a bikini.

It was kinda weird not having to do a warm up, odd not having a costume change, and it really sucked not having 2 minutes on stage, ALL BY MYSELF. I missed fitness. Most of the fitness gals were so sweet, outgoing, and engaging. Can't say I experienced the same in bikini. Not saying all bikini gals are snobs, I have friends who compete in bikini, and they are smart, sweet, and not stuck up! At Team U, I knew BIKINI wasn't for me, but I tried it again at the Olympia in the FLEX bikini contest, which was actually FUN! I didn't place but I had a good time and met some cool chicks!

After my 1st national competition JR NATIONALS, I was on a fitness high until I read the popular boards (while still in Chicago). Apparently I performed what a well known bodybuilder labeled "a dance routine." He also said I was not dark enough, not lean, etc. I had all mandatories-which were NOT even a requirement (*minus the L press). I did two 1 arm pushups, straddle press, splits, kicks, headstand/press, jumps, among other strength moves. I'll continue to do what I am strong at (dance + fitness skills). I don't know why I was so offended!? Probably because I was suffering from diet brain, but it was enough to make me turn my back on fitness and try bikini.

I am interested to see how the fitness routine scores pan out in 2011! They added the mandatories back in! Cool, I was doing them anyway! Who will go pro!? Who will be the newest fitness sensation?! There are many seasoned, fitness vets who have been it at it for over half a decade and complete each competition season with no pro card. It inspires me to see these same gals NOT walk away from what they love! These ladies get huge cheers from the audience and I know their time will come. They belong in fitness, pro or not.

Back to the physique talk. I was the "skinniest, not as lean" competitor up there. I was at MY leanest, ever.... yet I couldn't compare to the other girls. They had big round shoulders, huge lats, 6 packs, quad sweeps, and rock hard glutes. I overheard comments about me making finals. Hell, I thought I was dreaming when they told me I made finals, I almost didn't pack my costume!! Oddly, it was the routine score that got me into finals.

My question at the time was "at what point does it become too much? Or not enough?" Those close to me thought I looked just fine and all said "do not add more muscle!" Genetically, I probably will never have the ideal NPC/IFBB physique but I can try to BE THE BEST I CAN BE. After my year of emotional ups and down, I'm going to be OK with being the smaller fitness gal who dances.

Fitness is a dying sport, and I don't want to see it go away. Hopefully, people continue to NOT downgrade routines because there isn't gymnastics or downgrade the ladies who are not as muscular!

In 2010, despite saying I was doing it for fun and experience, my ultimate goal was to eventually earn a pro card but reality hit after my first national competition. It can take years for that happen (with a few exceptions, lucky gals) but I'm no longer making the pro card a goal. For 2011, my goal is to BE THE BEST I CAN BE! What is meant to be, will be.

Offseason fun!

When the rush and hecticness of fitness comeptitions and dancing ended all at once, I got bored. I welcomed the calmness but by Nov, I was so over it. I needed something that would keep me in shape and would challenge me mentally, so I decided I would run!! I had my eyes set on a half marathon and started a running regimen. Then came memories of my stress fracture last time I trained for a half years ago. I also felt like I would lose muscle I worked so hard for last year to compete in fitness! Furthermore, I had to face the fact that I could NOT stand running. I don’t mind sprints, or run intervals during cardio but I couldn’t commit to all that running. Then I injured myself, so I had to completely rest for a couple weeks….half marathon idea went out the window.

At work, a couple coworkers were assaulted. Personally, I’ve been swung at, and threatended by MOSTLY men, so I finally put my foot down and researched martial arts (MA) gyms in my area. My search covered just about all MAs out there, from Tae kwon do, hapkido, karate, caperioa, then I landed on a couple MMA websites that offered muay thai! I knew I wanted to learn how to punch and block, but the dancer in me wanted to utiltize my legs and KICK. A light bulb went off! So here I am, a couple weeks into muay thai training & loving it, from the sore muscles and joints to my bruised shins.

The past couple of visits, I stayed to observe their no gi ju jitsu to see if it’s something I wanted to try. Ton of big guys take that class, so it always scared me because of how "close" we have to get. SOMEHOW I ended up jumping in mid class and actually enjoyed it!! I don’t see why I can’t train in both muay thai AND ju jitsu!

I think my biggest challenge is the mental aspect of getting over the fact that I’m doing something completely new and somewhat of a "brutal" sport, not that I’m planning on jumping in the ring. I suck: my boxing technique stinks, I punch like a fairy, and I don’t kick as hard as I thought I could!! Additionally, after some exposure to ju jitsu, I know NOTHING about submissions or rolling. Then I have to calm myself down and remind myself, everyone was a beginner once. If they can grow into a great boxer, or get that good at ju jitsu over the years, so can I!

After dancing for so long, I developed the dancer’s confidence that I brought to any dance class, I knew I could hang with choreography or technique progressions! Muay thai and ju jitsu is the complete opposite. I go to every class intimidated, surrounded by men who kick ass (yes there are girls who kick ass, but the men to women ratio is like 10:1 at that gym). That alone pushes me to not drop to my knees on our 90th push up, it forces me to suck it up when my arms feel like I can not do another jab, and it gets me fired up despite my legs and booty being on fire after several rounds of kicking.

Since I planned on retiring from the pro dance scene after this year, I am thrilled to find a new sport that pushes me like this, mentally and physically. I’ll always remain a dancer at heart, but I found a new passion.

Injury sucks for this fitness gal!!

I hurt my trapezius muscle at work a couple weeks ago, and still dealing with a lot of pain and spasms. I tried some light activity yesterday (which killed my shoulder), I lasted 20 minutes. Today, I am feeling more brave so aimed for 30 minutes & even tried some slow burpees to test out my strength (ouch, but getting more confident) ETA I learned from my coach this was a NO NO! Oops, now I know what to stick to as I get pain free.

I'm slowly but surely getting back into fitness. I initially planned on a short run this morning, but I was hurting so I opted for an at home dance-cardio workout and some abs. I don't want to get deconditioned or gain weight so I've been trying to control my portions & eating a lot of vegan foods. Food cravings have been out of control lately, which is weird. I don't know if feeling mentally down correlates to me wanting to eat crap. I did give in to some vegetarian tofu based asian take out, which was SO GOOD! ;)

Life sucks when I do not work out, and I hate that I don't have a choice in the matter. The difference exericse makes in my life is astounding, not just physically! Mentally, I get depressed when I'm not moving my body. I can not wait get back to running, dancing, and lifting when I am all better.

Patiently waiting for my trap to heal so I can continue my quest to be a fitness champ! :)

Science Cheerleaders Perform at the USA Science and Engineering Festival

Science Cheerleader at the USA Science and Engineering Festival

I spent last weekend in Washington D.C. for the USA Science and Engineering Festival as a representative of Science Cheerleader! We attended the USA Science and Engineer Festival in D.C, amazing time and what a cool city!!!

Here is a pic from the Science Cheerleader event!

Action shot!

In the pic w/ me: Summer (Houston Texan), NASA aerospac engineer; Regina (Washing Redskins), ED doctor; Kim (Iowa Energy), computer engineer. I met some amazing, smart, sweet cheerleaders from all over the country. I like how Science Cheerleader is teaming with NFL, hopefully we can inspire more young gals to embrace their love for science & not think it's lame or nerdy to LOVE it!

Here is a blog of me introducing Newton's First Law of Motion:
http://www.sciencecheerleader.com/2010/10/science-of-nfl-football-6-newtons-first-law-of-motion/

FITNESS UPDATE:
I spent an amazing week in FL instead of competing at NPC Nationals in ATL, and do not regret it, as it was great family time & I am not planning on competing in NPC bikini anymore, as mention a month or so ago. It was the 1st time in YEARS we were all together, and my older bro is headed to Iraq again as we speak. :(

Since the Olympia, I feel like I've been out of the loop in the fitness industry but it was a welcomed mental and physical break!! Aside from training, I am going to focus on career stuff and dance my booty off all winter. I am putting in a lot of hours in the ER this week and next, and will try to back off so I can focus on training, going to dance class, and reconnecting with friends and spend more time at home with family every chance I get.

I have end this post with GO SCIENCE! :) I said it so much while I was in D.C, it was fitting!

October updates!

NATIONALS
Happy Peak Week to all National competitors headed to ATL! I will be attending the USA Science and Engineering Festival in D.C. next weekend as a part of Science Cheerleader. I get to wear a very cute, NFL style uniform, poms, boots, and all that jazz, so excited!! I've been learning choreography and can't wait to meet other former/current NFL cheerleaders who share my interests in SCIENCE!

We will be teaching jr cheer clinics and performing Sat and Sun so come on out! I've always dreamed of going to the Olympia. It finally occured to me that I should just go, why not!? After booking the trip, I got a booth gig and decided to enter the FLEX contest. Here my little recap of the event that took place in Las Vegas over the weekend! Incredible is one word I have to describe this weekend.

PS: I added some pics and adding video to my Facebook fitness page!

Thusday, 9/23: Meet the Olympians.

Each pro is at a table so you can meet them! Nicole sat next to ERIN STERN!! She is a former Gator so we chatted about UofF. Sweet gal and congrats to her. I've known Nic for so long, it was an honor to see her interact with her fans face to face. I only dream of getting to the level she is at as a fitness gal. Seeing all the bikini, figure, fitness, and bodybuilders all in one setting was overwhelming but amazing. I talked to a few more pros. Kicking myself for not getting pictures with anyone but the memory will live forever.

Fri, 9/24 AM-5pm: EXPO!!

The day started off AMAZING because I got to ride with Nicole on the pro bus (all fitness, bikini, figure pros). I had a freakin BLAST working for the Organic Monkey booth. Tasha Cicherello owns this company. Awesome gal to work for. She is so pretty, personable, and fun, AND fans loved her style and taste in booth wear.

I also competed in FLEX search at the expo and then went right back to work. I had fun at the contest and met a few sweet bikini gals! I still feel really weird competing in bikini. I figured, "what the hell" since I needed to get in shape quick for Vegas anyway, it was a motivator. I will probably never do it again lol but it was fun!

Now I see why booth girls say expos and conventions are exhausting. I didn't realize how much it can take out of you but it was well worth it and fun. I got to meet so many people and fans of the IFBB. As a newbie nobody, I was honored that some people even wanted to take a pic with me LOL.

FRI PM: OLYMPIA

Watched the fitness, bikini, and Ms Olympia from start to finish. WOW!!!! After watching these competitions for years on DVD or webcast, this was 10000xs better. I got chills watching the fitness gals! Seeing my idols compete in person at the Olympia is a dream come true. Nicole kicked ASS and looked her BEST! Congrats to her & all the Olympia fitness competitors!!
Sat 9/25 AM-5pm: Day 2 of FLEX. I didn't make finals and was not suprised. I never counted on it. I don't know how they can narrow it down with so many freakin gorgeous women in tiny bikinis. I felt good since I only dieted for 2-3 week LOL! I know I could've looked better physique wise & posing wasn't sassy enough. As I stated before, my goal was just to fit into the bikini & get on stage.

After the contest, I hung out at the booth for awhile, Nicole worked the booth on day 2, again it was so awesome watching fans point and say "that's Nicole! OMG!" and ask for a photo/autograph!! I'm so proud of her, seeing her go from point A to stardom is inspiring! I finally got to walk around the expo and got so many samples and met some booth people.

SAT PM: Figure & Mr Olympia!! Again, WOW!! I got chills when Erin Stern won, and soooo happy Alicia placed in the top!!!! The BB was also fun to watch live. Kai was my fave poser. Congrats to all Olympians, everyone looked the part!

GALA post show:Again, honored to be there with all Olympias and pleasantly surprised Tanji & Adela rememered me from Jr Nats and said hey to me. I met Camala as well! I was in fitness heaven! All the girls are soo pretty and make me wanna squat and bench press for days.

After party at HAZE! Nic and I went out with Alicia, Chaundra, and their S.O's and had so much fun! I only had 1 shot and was lightheaded lol. We went out to eat and had pankcakes that were bigger than my dog. Had good conversation about the industry, fitness, and of course how AWESOME Nicole and Alicia did that weekend.

So...with that said....

I've decided I am NOT going to do Nationals! As of now, no more bikini. I'm going to go back to my roots and so FITNESS here I come!!! I am going to remain realistic about it. I know that my body type & background probably won't make me a top contender & I may not even get a pro card, but I got into this because I loved the routine round. It isn't only about competing or pro cards. Just being around industry people who enjoy what I love is fulfulling enough. This weekend proved that I don't need a pro card or titles to enjoy the industry. At the end of the day, I must be happy with ME. I still have a lot to think about and to work on, but this trip gave me much needed motivation and inspiration!

Fitness-through good times and bad.

"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."-Gandhi

When I go through rough patches, all I want to do is eat eat eat & cry cry cry. I'm going through a rough patch at this time and of course, all I want to do is curl up and order Chinese food. I don't think I've been put through such a rough patch in the midst of prepping for a contest (I'm getting ready for NPC Nationals. I will be competing in BIKINI)!

When getting ready for Jr Nats & TEAM U, of course I was just BUSY but this time around is different because I'm dealing with some personal stuff. This has been a test of determination and strength.

The new & improved ME has chosen meditation & daily prayer! I have continued with my training and clean eating. Amazingly, despite everything I'm going through at this time, I'm challenging myself to feel positive, and I must say I feel really good physically. This has taught me a valuable lesson for the future when facing a challeging time. Finding comfort in food will only make me feel worse. Finding comfort in spirituality, faith & fitness will heal all wounds.

"God sometimes does try to the uttermost those whom he wishes to bless." -Gandhi

The 2010 Olympia is only 18 days away!

In a couple weeks, I will be in Vegas for the 2010 Olympia. I still need to pinch myself as this has been a long time goal to attend the biggest show on this planet for pro competitors!!!

To make this even sweeter, I landed an amazing opportunity to work a booth at the Olympia for an organic health supplement organization. It can't get any better than that because I believe in the product and mission that they're selling to the population! Furthermore, The Organic Monkey sponsors THE Nicole Duncan, IFBB pro fitness competitor!! She is a true role model for women. I feel more companies should take note and choose amazing women to showcase their product!! To me, a role model not only looks the part, but is classy, sassy, educated, well spoken.

I have been on a tiny hiatus from competing but planning to hit the stage again real soon!!! Here is what I am doing to regain control and focus on the task at hand!

1) Think about my intention and find inspiration. Why am I a competitor? Seeing pictures of my idols online or in a magazine help get me on my bike in the AM for cardio!

2) Get excited again! I find talking about competitions, thinking about myself in the best shape of my life really gets the intensity going.

3) Slow down, build anticipation. I almost forgot to ENJOY every aspect of this fun journey. It's the little things along the way that make me happy! The search for new suits, new monthly workouts to look forward to! Not to mention meeting new people, picking a contest date and working backwards to dial in while watching my body change!

4) Awareness of my mental/physical being. Daily motivation can be hard to find on in the midst of a hectic schedule! Digging deep helps put me back where I belong so I can stick to it. There are rare days when I need a yoga session and dance class vs. weights/cardio, or sometimes I need to do NOTHING, so I listen to my body. Not beating myself up over cheats or missed workouts was key to letting go of my bad habits while forming new, healthy ones!

5) Learning to be fearless! I posted my goals publicly! This helped build an online support system on fitness boards and Facebook, the encouragement is always much appreciated and needed. Getting on stage and breaking old habits of eating and thinking gets me out of my comfort zone.

6) I visualize what I WILL become.

7) Practice new habits to break old habits.
-Think about the benefits NOT the difficulties!
Old: I have to do an hour of cardio..barf! **NEW: I will look amazing on stage!
-Replace negative thoughts with positives!
Old: My thighs jiggle, my stomach is bloated, ugh! **NEW: My shoulders are growing! I see progress!
-Don't think about what I can't eat; think about the healthy, good foods I CAN eat.
Old: No more chinese food. **NEW: I can't wait to try quinoa and curried spicy lentils!

Daily Dozen

My daily dozen includes rituals that I try to complete each day.

1. It came at the right time, as I've been struggling with post show blues and not knowing what's next. After reading this, I realized this article could be applied to my career in nursing, my dance career, and of course, my competition journey.

After this weekend of R & R, I came to the conclusion that:
a) I need to revisit my goals weekly so I don't lose sight of them!
b) I need a plan for my goals to be reached!
c) I reminded myself this is a PROCESS, a journey and I'm in it for years!
d) I need to answer the questions, "Why am I doing this?"

Take home points from that article that meant a lot to me:
1) "It’s the little things you pay attention to that help you achieve your goals."
So many factors go into contest prep. If you're a competitor, you know exactly what I mean. Attention to detail is needed in this sport. Every single thing you present on stage is judged (posing, tan, hair, suit, physique, smile, etc.)! I also think it's cruicial to pay attention to the mental aspect. For me, it's overcoming fear of being on stage alone. I'm used to being in front of a crowd, but with a team of dancers, never ALONE!!

2)"What does achieving your goal really represent to you?"
We all want success, we all want to win but WHY? I get that most of us do it for a pro card, but why? What IF one does not achieve that elusive pro card? What will happen to said goals? If one gets the pro card but doesn't win, then what?

I realize success in the industry will come once I realize my goals and what I want to achieve from the industry! From there, I can work on creating the opportunities needed to make my dreams come true. I had the mindset of "WHATEVER IT TAKES" to get through my grueling schedule of dance team rehearsals, 12 hour ED shifts, hectic game schedule, working my 2nd job, and workouts! That determination will carry me through until the end.

The final point of the article are thought provoking questions all competitors should ask?
•How bad do you really want the success that’s behind that one last door?
•What action, outside your comfort zone, are you willing to take to make it happen?

Ok, now what!?

So I did it, I switched gears and competed in bikini at Team Universe in NJ. I placed 8th in class F. I was happy with my placing and presentation. After doing show after show as a fitness competitor, it was definitely an eye opening experience, for sure! Despite feeling like absolute crap (dealt with feeling lightheaded and dizzy all day and the day before), I made sure I worked it in a classy and sassy way for my bikini debut, I didn't want it to show in my face or body language just how crappy I was feeling. The 15 seconds on stage striking bikini poses felt longer than a 2 minute fitness routine, LOL. I was nervous!!!

NOTES: I need to continue to work on my stubborn legs and thighs, and glutes!! My suit bottoms had too much coverage so I changed into a smaller pink bikini for the night show and was told that was ideal.

I got jealous watching the fitness gals, and immediately starting thinking of themes! LOL However, since Jr Nats, I have realized I am FAR from having an ideal NPC fitness bod (hence the switch to bikini), and after Team U, not sure if I am capable of achieving a fitness physique with these long limbs of mine.

So what have I decided?! Fitness or bikini?? I decided to not make a decision until I had a week off! Stay tuned.

Staying focused

I "slept in" until 8am this morning. I was tired but I knew I needed to hop on my exercise bike for cardio so I could watch World Cup soccer, fit in my weights, AND prep for a game tonight. I've realized each contest I've prepped for has been in the midst of chaos LOL. Team U is no different, but I'm happy that I'm staying busy and that I just have 2 games + 2 shifts til Team U! Though it sucks, I have to remember how lucky I am to do what I do.

I've had many ask me for my contest prep diet & workouts, I can't due to it being a paid program and individualized but I warn them that what I do is NOT normal, it is only tempory and desigend to dial me in for these competitions. Many don't realize the time and effort of fitting in cardio & weights most days of the week, prepping foods in advance, eliminating foods that average people consider "healthy," and the low energy that hits us that makes us want to cry (or am I the only one who suffers)?

What keeps me going, despite the lack of sleep, lack of time, lowered calories, and having NO LIFE AT ALL? Focusing on the task at hand. How many people can say they do what I do? A tiny percent of the population can say that they've survived a brutal dance audition and perform professionally for a sports team. An even SMALLER percent can say they've survived and conquered contest prep and stepped on a stage. I do what I do because there is no time like the present. I learned my lesson and delayed my fitness dream, week after week, saying "oh, I will start my diet Monday." Weeks led to months, months turned into years. Here I am TODAY, preparing for Team Universe, my 2nd national contest, and I can just cry because 1) I am tired, but 2) I am proud of what I've achieved in 2010.

Before contest prep, changing my foods and training hard has changed me 100%! I look better than ever, and I changed my body composition though good nutrition and weights, competitions are my reward. So it's not only about stepping on stage, it's about looking at myself daily and giving myself the gift of health and wellness again.

After Team U, I will go back to "normal" life (work and dancing), but I will continue to train hard and eat healthy (after a few celebration meals, of course)! Staying focused will keep us all on track of our goals, short or long term. Remember why we do what we do!

Team U in 2

My second ever NPC national show is creeping up quickly & I've been working quickly to prepare for my national debut in bikini! I've been so sick for a few days, I haven't left the house since Thursday so this is a road block but I am not going to let it get me down!

I'll be getting some bikinis in the mail next week. Shout out to Kristin who is sending me a couple of hers, and Rebecca for recommending bikini sites! I have heard stories about girls being asked to change, so I am going to be prepared if a suit doesn't fit correctly.

Diets & workouts haven't been 100% due to being really sick, not to mention post Jr Nats yummies. I am handling food better than I was post Eastern Seaboard LOL. Being sick, the LAST thing I want to eat is fish and spinach. ew! All I've wanted to eat is soup, and frozen soy pudding, tea and coffee, the heat and cold soothe my throat and sinuses. I've been good with water intake!!

I must confess, I'm MORE nervous about bikini than I was about fitness! I think it's the posing, since there are not set guidelines, except front & back stances. I also keep hearing bikini is "all about the booty." What does that mean??? They want a big butt? A tight butt? Stick out your butt? :)

Furthermore, I know they want sass, but at Jr Nats, some girls tried to exude sassiness, but did NOT come across as such. It looked like they were trying waaaaay too hard. I wonder if that is what judges want??

From fitness-to-bikni....oh my!

NPC Team Universe in 2 weeks!

Going to Team U!

I don't want anyone to think I'm a quitter or give up easily, because I'm NOT a quitter & I love a challenge. HOWEVER, I'm going to switch divisions for Team U. I will compete in bikini for this show. This is my final show of the year! I don't have enough time to build a "NPC fitness physique" nor do I have enough time to create a new & improved fitness routine in 2.5 weeks.

When NPC began the NPC bikini division, that's what I orginally wanted to do, as stated in my former (deleted) journal. After much debate & my desire to push myself, I decided to try fitness so began training for that in January! I give myself a pat on the back for trying fitness at Jr Nats. No regrets, I had a blast & loved every second of it and loved all the fitness gals! I know what I need to work on to be a serious contender for an IFBB fitness pro card. I got killed in the physique round so I'm going to be patient and build my body so I won't get killed in physique round again!

The next 2 weeks are ridiculous, I'd stress myself out and kill my mind & body if I were to attempt fitness at Team U. Here is a glance, starting w/ this weekend:
Fri & Sat-ER

Sun-Game

Mon-ER

Tues-Game

Wed-ER

Thur-Game

Fri-ER

Sat-Game

Sun & MON-ER

Tues-off (my food shop, pack & primp day)

Wed-Game (cook my foods)

Thur- off to Team U.

I'm dizzy just looking at my schedule! After explaining this schedule to some of my competitor pals, they totally understood and agreed it was a good decision. LOL I didn't want to go into Team U with dread, I want it to be positive and fun, just like JR Nats! I think if I stuck with fitness, I'd feel defeated & dread it because lack of time to prep properly for fitness! Next time I compete in fitness, I want to be the total package!

Once I chose to switch divisions for Team U, I was happy with the decision. I spoke with the promoter and a couple judges just to make sure it was ok to switch for this show, they gave the thumbs up. So here I am, prepping for bikini.

I've had a few support me on this, and I've had others tell me not do it. I see both sides, but one thing we can ALL agree on is that I won't be going pro in fitness anytime soon LOL...NOT that I think I'll go pro in bikini, but let's face it, I don't have a fitness physique right now! Why not give it a try while I'm no named newbie LOL. If I suck at bikini, oh well! I will be headed into an off season anyway!

I am still a fitness girl, just trying something different to see if my current physique is a better fit in a different division. I have a lot to learn in the next weeks, as I don't know how to bikini pose or walk like the bikini gals, but it'll be a fun change and less stress. I also still need a bikini!!!

I hope you enjoy the next 2 weeks of bikini journaling and confessions of a fitness gal trying bikini.

NPC JR NATIONALS!! After spotting and meeting quite a few NPC and IFBB competitors, and spotting photographers and promoters, etc...my mind was in 100 places. That night, I refocused by doing a tiny cardio session and running my routine in my mind after the big check in.

FRIDAY:
I tried to remain calm and relaxed all day but glad I was starting with the routine round, as I knew I would score better in this round. After seeing just about everyone throw gymnastics, I knew I had to dance my ass off LOL. I had such a good time performing, I forgot it was a competition for a second. My routine felt OK, I have done it better, but I only ran my routine full out twice since NPC Eastern Seaboard (due to working over time, not having space to run it, moving, etc.) so I was HAPPY with it.

After routines, my mind ventured to a weird place and I got really down on myself and almost burst into tears, I blame the lack of carbs, low energy, and just being unconfident in myself because I knew the routine round was over and I had the physique round the next morning. I had to get it together, and Nicole put many things in perspective with a good "tough love" talk. I felt better after that, til I read a MD review about me, it wasn't totally bad and had some positives, but it was mentioned that my tan wasn't dark enough and my body was too soft. I knew coming in, I would be a smaller & softer competitor-nothing I could do to change my body over night, that BUT I knew I could change my tan, you better believe I threw on 3-4 more coats of tanner on LOL.

SATURDAY:
AM: Aww, the dreaded physique round in the AM. I was still holding water and realized I didn't work on posing as much as I needed to, especially for a national level show. I dread this round, it didn't help the tall class was stacked with 6 pack abs, huge shoulders, and V tapers. The other classes had more competitors with a variety of smaller or softer gals, but NOT THE TALL CLASS! Everyone came in hard and lean, except me. Despite being in the BEST shape of my life, this was NPC fitness nationals and I know I had work to do if I ever hit the national stage again.

Once I build some muscle and learn how to dial in to come in harder/leaner, I will learn to love this round and pose my booty off....but until then, this is the round that freaks me OUT!

PM: I slowly got ready for the night show and almost didn't pack my routine outfit/shoes. I was expecting to not make finals and already had plans to eat and party!! After intros, I walked off stage and was told "congratulations, you made top 5, see you back for your routine." I blurted out, "What!? Excuse me?!" He repeated what he said. I asked, "are you sure???" He looked at his paper and stated, "Sandra Fields, right? yes, I am sure." The promoter then joked, "Are you OK with that?? Did you not want to perform your routine?!" LOL I was speechless and I got a little teary eyed. I made finals. I performed my routine 10 times better that night (go figure, when it's not judged)...and was proud of myself for even getting the guts to compete in the NPC...period! I got 5th place and felt like a million dollars LOL.

Sunday:
Photo shoot in the AM. Finally ate Giordono's famous pizza and we went to a movie Sunday afternoon, then we parted ways and headed back to ATL.

I had the most amazing time in Chicago, I learned so much and have no regrets. I am planning on competing at NPC Team Universe so I can get one last amazing national experience in before I take a much needed break until next year.I will try to come in leaner and change a couple things in the routine, but 3 weeks doesn't leave a lot of time for major changes whatsoever-that is what the off season is for! My goals for Team U are the same as they were for Jr Nats: have a great time, do my best, and LEARN from the experience!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://sandrafieldsdancefitness.blogspot.com/2010/06/npc-jr-nationals-i-did-it.html' title='NPC JR NATIONALS!! This competition snuck up so quickly, BOOM! It's that time!!!

As a newbie competitor making a national debut in FITNESS, I must say I am nervous, scared, and overwhelmed but it's NOW OR NEVER!!!! I've dreamed of this moment for sooo long. Back in the 90s, I dreamed of competing, earning an IFBB pro card, wearing the pretty bikinis, being featured in a spot in a fitness magazine, as you can see...I am a dreamer, and I want it ALL.

As a smaller sized, very tall fitness competitor who dances and does NOT ONE single gymnastics move, the odds may be stacked against me. People who have never taken gymnastics or dance classes do not understand that it takes years to do dance moves, just like gymnastics. I hope it can be appreciated by the audience and judges alike. I know I have lots of skills to learn and strength to gain, but I love my fitness routine.

Preparing for my national debut couldn't have come at a WORSE time in my life. This has been a huge challenge and I wanted to throw in the towel but I thought about how I would feel, sitting at home, knowing I could be on that stage. Then I remember I competed 5 years ago, and did the same thing, saying, "I am going to take a tiny break and will compete at nationals later this year." It took 5 years to hit the fitness stage again!!! I refuse to let that happen again. So, I cleaned up my act and did as much as I could to get ready for this upcoming weekend the last couple of weeks. Again, reminding myself this is my 1st national competition and lay off the pressure. There are many more national competitions to come AND to better prepare for!!!

I know I may not be the "NPC FITNESS" ideal physique-wise or routine-wise, but take it or leave it. I am coming to dance my ass off on that stage in Chicago. :)

Confessions of a newbie

11 days until NPC JR NATIONALS! MY FITNESS NATIONAL DEBUT!

Wow...I can NOT believe how close I am to NPC Jr Nationals. It's so close I can smell it. Right after I earned my NPC NQ in fitness a few short weeks ago, my life got CHAOTIC. I am talking a big move, games/rehearsals, work *putting in overtime because staffing is so short and lets be honest, I need the money! Who had time for the dieting, gym, posing, or routine practice!?!?! NOT I! However, I did what I could, when I could, so it has been tricky sneaking in strength workouts/cardio and maintaining calories in-out when I didn't have a set schedule or time for the gym. However, I am only 2 lbs from contest weight, so I did a decent job of maintaining my body!!

I had such a weird mindset the last few weeks, I could NOT focus my efforts on the process and I blame the chaos. I felt lost and scared, there were a couple occassions I was going to back out. The "what if's" came around again, as well as being worried about the competition, not myself. In my gut, I know this is NOT going to the show where I earn a pro card, as I am realistic and know I'm going against fabulous, talented ladies with many years and NPC shows under their belt! I will be the no name, tall, dancer chick making a debut...and I am OK with that. :)

So, my goals as a newbie fitness competitor making a national debut at Jr Nats include:
1) get national show experience
2) do my best
3) HAVE FUN!

This way, it is a WIN WIN. If I do my best, I will have no regrets. I have NO PRESSURE on myself, as there is NO need for it. My coach and her staff made it clear that 1st time competitors are eaten away with the self imposed, and very unneccessary mental pressure. I was tired of being scared and lost. I'm replacing the WHAT IF'S with positive thoughts (GO ME! YOU CAN DO IT! GOOD JOB!).

I came up with a game plan for the remainder of 2010 so I am inspired again. :) These plans will be implemented after TEAM U! :)

NATIONALLY QUALIFIED!

I competed locally at the NPC Eastern Seaboard this past weekend. I had a good time!! Despite having zero energy and feeling crappy, I managed another win and earned my NPC NQ in fitness. It was the 1st time my roomie and I competed together, it was so much fun to have her there! We cheered each other on and made the best of the day and evening show. She is nationally ranked FAP fitness competitor but earned her NQ as well!

For the past few weeks, I said if I earned my NQ, I would compete at Jr Nats. Oddly enough, I spent most of Sunday deciding between FUP and Jr Nats. For the past month or so, I really felt like I should stick with NPC so I decided to go that route today and booked my hotel and flight for Chicago. Everything has been falling into place with the NPC so I need to ride that wave and enjoy my "comeback" season with the NPC! I also told Tamee which suit I wanted for winning the NPC Midwest, I can not wait to receive my new suit!!!! It is GORGEOUS.

I know I said this before, I never thought I would have the guts to compete in the NPC for years, and here I am about to make my national debut next month in Chicago at the NPC JR NATIONALS!!! I have a realistic outlook and will go in with a mindset to enjoy the process and the fitness journey!!! I will remain positive as I evolve into a NPC national competitor! ((THAT FELT GOOD TO SAY))

This competition will be dedicated to dancers!! REPRESENT!!! :) I wonder if I will be the only 5'9" gal, let alone the only one who doesn't tumble?? A couple of gals go their pro card without tumbling, so there is hope. GO DANCERS!

I did! The competition took place in St. Louis, NPC Midwest, and I am happy to say I won! Yep, little (well, 5'9" is NOT little) ole dancer me, won! I competed against another fitness gal who will make it big-her physique is amzing and she is gorgeous! Many of the gals who competed were beautiful and had sick bods. My physique looked ten times better at the night show...so I need to figure out how to dial in 100% for the AM show from here on out. I saw ABS and my upper body was CUT!

As for winning, I won a free 6 month gym membership to a local gym in St Louis, a big sword, a big trophy, and a FREE TAMEE MARIE COMPETITION SUIT!!!!

MY ROUTINE:
Feedback I received was to add in a few more tricks (I have all but one mandatory, but thought I made up for it by adding other tricks) and to tighten up (more cardio). I took note and can't wait to wow them at Nationals!

I am going to research fitness routines to see if the amount of skills I have matches up. I have an extremely fluid routine that I packed with dance tricks (pirouettes, leaps, axle), mandatories (except the L press), yoga tricks, jumps, splits; the only tumbling I perform: round off shush, cartwheels, forward/back rolls.

My roomie and I tried really hard to make it cohesive, fluid, and entertaining while keeping it hard, so I wonder if I make things look way too easy? Or is it due to lack of gymnastics that it doesn't look like a hard routine? :( It definitely lit a fire under me, if I get that NQ, I will add even more fun stuff. lol

NEXT UP!
I am preparing for yet another NPC competition in ATL May 8-NPC Eastern Seaboard. I have SO MUCH going on right now so I am feeling especially worn out and kinda sick of dieting LOL!! I am still on a high from last weekend and want a few more celebratory meals but I have to get it together and remember why I am doing this!

I need to refocus and recharge ASAP for this show, as it is a national qualifier. I've had my sights set on NPC Jr Nationals. If I do not qualify, I may actually compete at the Fitness Universe.

FEDERATIONS:
I have pretty much made up my mind that I will most likely stick with the NPC right now! I enjoyed myself in St Louis and could totally see myself in the NPC/IFBB world in fitness-I know I've got lotsa work to do but this is a JOURNEY. I will see how this weekend goes. If I earn my NQ, I will definitely go to Jr Nats, Team U, etc! If I do not place top 3/top 5, I can try to earn my NQ elsewhere but due to lack of time, $, and the season kick starting with rehearsals/games, that would be near impossible and I can compete at Fitness America in Miami! I know that would be a fun show!

But I digress, back to the NPC/IFBB. It can take years before earning that elusive IFBB pro card, so I will do what I can each day to inch closer to my goals. Aside from increasing my strength and fitness skills, I will need to change my lower body so my booty and legs can match the leaness of my upper body. My coach told me it can take a long time to completely change the shape, so I am not expecting miracles after only months of training. :)

***NATIONAL QUALIFIER, I AM IN PURSUIT OF YOU***!!!!!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://sandrafieldsdancefitness.blogspot.com/2010/05/i-did-i-am-officially-fitness.html' title='I did! I have entered the NPC Midwest competition that will be held in St. Louis on April 24-I will be 2 weeks out from the May 8 Atlanta NPC Eastern Seaboard when I compete at this novice competition.

I think a novice competition is just what I need to get the ball rolling as I begin my transition into the fitness world! I wanted to do this show because it sounds like a lot of fun: food provided for the competitors, limo service to take out the competitors to a club after the show; furthermore, the promoters are waiving the entry fee for all fitness competitors, which is a huge help! When I found out Nicole Duncan was going to be one of the guest performers, I was IN! I found a flight, applied for my 1st ever NPC card, and mailed off my registration to the promoter.

6 weeks out!

Fitness competition madness

2010 is my "comeback" year after a 5 year hiatus from competing. I am training & dieting, feeling great, and having fun.

The first show I plan to compete at is the May 8 NPC Eastern Seaboard. Then I'll compete at Fitness Universe in June (which is the same weekend of NPC Jr Nationals). Jr Nationals requires national qualification, FUP does not, although they used to a few years back. I wonder if FUP stopped requiring NQ due to the decline of fitness competitors?

I've always kept up with fitness competitions in the industry, from FAP, NPC and IFBB! So I am excited that, as a novice, I can compete in both federations. Some suggest sticking to one or the other. I'm competing in both this year for a few reasons:

1) I have never competed in FAP or NPC so I don't want to make a commitment to one or the other without experiencing the organization.

2) I respect both federations and all the athletes, both federations have fitness stars that I admire.

3) I want to see which federation I fit in the best, and if fitness will remain my division of choice. (for awhile, I had my sights set on NPC bikini or figure)

4) I must say, my ultimate dream was to have a pro card (since I was a teen), however, I'm not sure I can ever produce the physique necessary to become an IFBB fitness pro. There was a point when I couldn't believe how incredibly lean & muscular pro fitness was getting. When I was reading about a pro show in a magazine a few years back, some of my coworkers saw pics of the fitness pros and thought they were bodybuilders (and not natural). I educated them about the different divisions, but they couldn't believe it & didn't have nice things to say. At the present time, some of the pros are looking so much healthier, gorgeous, and feminine. I've been hearing very positive comments about some of the newer competitors (pros and amateurs) that have a look that is more achievable & marketable! This has given me hope, and I'm noticing more FAP fitness girls now competing in NPC!

9.5 weeks to go!
I have been working on my fitness routine for a couple weeks and working on fitness skills. Fitness routine outfit is ordered. I've been seriously slacking in the diet/water department. The last 2 weeks have been physically and emotionally draining for me due to work and personal things going on. I tried to find comfort in food. It was instant gratification but did nothing for my fitness goals but I am back on track.

GO FITNESS!!

Going Pro Entertainment rocks!

The Feb. With a new year comes new goals for most of us with new years resolutions. Instead of just setting goals, back it with a plan so you are that much closer to sticking to it!

Have you ever heard of the SMART method of goal setting? It is effective and lays your goals out so you can dissect it and make it happen.

S: Specific (What are you going to do? How will you do it?)
M: Measureable (Target dates, stats, etc)
A: Attainable (Set goals that are achievable)
R: Realistic (Your goal may not be easy to reach, but devise a plan to make it happen in a realistic timely manner)
T: Time specific (next week? In 3 months? By December?)

Then there is the SMARTER method!
SMART are the same, however, add the E and the R and you get:
E: Evaluate
R: Reevaluate

Example of a weight loss SMART goal:
S: I will lose 10 lbs
M: Target weight will be 130 lbs.
A: I will aim to lose 0.5-1 lbs per week (or the goal could be "inches" as some people do not weight themselves).
R: I will reach this goal through proper nutrition and exercise Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday every week. This is realistic for my schedule.
T: I will lose 10 lbs by April.

Example of a dance SMART goal:
S: I will learn how to perform fouette pirouette; right and left.
M: I will work on pirouettes twice a week this month.
A: I will start with the basics to build strength and confidence (perfecting single & double turns, releves).
R: I know I can reach this goal because I have experience with pirouettes.
T: I will have my fouette by January 29.

See, you can apply the SMART method to any goal! Write it down or blog about it. As you create your goals and plan of action, think positive and visualize yourself succeeding! Make it happen!

Food/workout journaling

I purchased a food/workout notebook a couple months ago. I kept up with it at first, but now it sits in my gym bag, unused. I've decided to go back to online journaling. I was successful with online journaling when I began fitness competitions years ago, so why not go back to what works for me?!

The reasons I love it:

I can keep track of daily intake of calories, protein, fat grams!

I can keep track of calories burned in workouts!

Thre is a journal option, I can jot down how I am feeling, if I have a particular goal for the day, etc.!

I can also track my weight loss!

http://www.fitday.com/

It is free

Easy to use

You can even customize foods and input macronutrients not already in the fitday data base, like protein powders, supplements, etc.

Try it for a few days to get an idea of what you eat, how you eat, and, journal your feelings/goals. At Fitness Universe, my roommate, who is a NBA dancer-turned fitness competitor, took a picture with 2 other former cheerleaders! I can see how it would be easy to transition into competing. Most dancers/cheerleaders have that desire to stay on stage and perform/compete. For me, I am happiest when I am dancing...better yet, performing! I admit, it is a totally different scenario when it comes to the fitness stage. On the fitness stage, a competitor is solo (vs performing as a team) and the 2 piece bikini round is something I am not used to! Although NBA/NFL dancers audition in 2 piece outfits, we wear hose and dance shorts and a more concealing top! We are definitely not in bikinis! The NFL team I was a part of did not shoot bikini calenders.

When I competed a few years ago, I was still cheering for a NFL team. Back then, it wasn't tough juggling the two "hobbies" along with a full time job working in a gym. I wonder if I could handle it NOW? I am currently dancing for a WNBA team, work full time as a RN, and here I am worried if I could handle adding in training/dieting for fitness competitions? Only time will tell, I have a few months to decide about whether I will audition again; but there is no turning back when it comes to fitness competitions! I already have the shows I want to compete in picked out! All I need to do is diet and train.

READY, SET, COMPETE!

How to Make Homemade Anticellulite Scrub

Homemade Anti cellulite scrub:

INGREDIENTS: Coffee grounds after I’ve brewed my coffee (let it cool down), sea salt, olive oil with a few drops of essential oils. You can add epsom salt and/or shea butter if you wish.

DIRECTIONS: Scrub into body, concentrating on the horrid spots (my inner thighs and booty); the caffeine helps with the appearance of cellulite!

Another cellulite tip: Dry brush body before each shower with a body brush. I got mine at CVS and tend to just focus on my legs and abs when dry brushing.

What about creams and gels? I use anticellulite creams from spring-fall but tend to use "normal" lotions during winter. This season, I used Avon's cream, it has a ''massager" applicator, so I figured I could use the extra circulation stimulation!

I know these methods can not erase cellulite but I like taking action against it!! If anything, legs appear smoother and stay exfoliated!

Even trainers have trainers!

Someone asked me why do I feel I need a trainer to compete? Despite having a BS degree in exercise science and fitness certifications, and working as a PT and FI, I need a good kick in my booty...from someone else! I like being held accountable and having someone else do the thinking and planning for me. The fact that I want to take my physique and training to another level, I know myself and I know I can not do it alone.

When I competed a few years ago, I did most of my own training and diet. I felt I did ok, but not enough to really know how to dial in/peak for a show. I overdid cardio, and felt I lost too much weight by show time. The rebound was ridiculous and it has taken me until NOW to feel comfortable enough to put the "pedal to the metal" and start again! Having a trainer/coach who knows the industry of fitness competitions will make me more confident to hit the national stage and will definitely keep me motivated!

Most fitness/figure/bikini competitors, who are also trainers, have trainers. :)

Going Pro Entertainment coming to ATLANTA in 2010

Interested in becoming a dancer/cheerleader for the NFL, NBA, or any sports team?

Going Pro Entertainment has a workshop coming to Atlanta, GA! Needless to say, I don't take advantage of the gyms, limiting my workouts to the gym I work at (open M-F until 730p) and the community gym (it's nice but limited and can get crowded, not to mention it is closed after a certain time).

The solution? I got two memberships this weekend. I know I know...TWO?! Well, 1st membership is at a 24 hour gym, with an amazing rate and discounted enrollment fee, I couldn't turn it down! I really like that it is small but has all the essential equiment, and it is only a couple miles away! It does not look like a meat market either, not that there is anything wrong with gyms that are...but I like to get in and get out, and I really do not socialize when I workout! When I checked it out, members were in their own world, silent, working hard....no one sitting on a machine chatting away (huge pet peeve). 2nd membership is at a popular fitness chain. I couldn't ask for a better location (I also like I can workout at any of their gyms nationwide) and the fitness classes are great, which also means studio space for routine practice and so I can work on dance skills! I also mananged to get a GREAT DEAL that I couldn't walk away from. With the economy, even gyms are willing to make a deal. I figured, paying for these two memberships is still much cheaper than 1 upscale membership.

HAPPY TRAINING!

About Me

My name is Sandra Fields, RN (BSN).
